When the term “diocesan” or “diocese” is used in this document, we want potential applicants to understand that we are seeking a person to serve with us who will not only support ministries to youth and young adults already affiliated with The Episcopal Church, but to also bring the love of Christ to youth and young adults, especially those at risk in our culture, who are currently un-churched. This position, in other words, is one with a strong missional component.
The Youth and Young Adult Coordinator works collaboratively with the Bishop of the Diocese of California, his staff, the Department of Youth and Young Adults (DYYA), congregations, and diocesan organizations to imagine, create, promote, implement, evaluate, and support youth and young adult ministry, as well as events and trainings
We seek an energetic, passionate, Christian minister and team player, with administrative, communicative, and leadership skills to build up and support youth and adult leaders across the diocese.
The Youth and Young Adult Coordinator works within the Congregational Ministries Working Group and shares in its common work and ministry. Among other administrative responsibilities, the Youth & Young Adult Coordinator helps to develop and administer a substantial budget, including scholarship and grant allocations.
Diocesan Youth & Young Adult Goals:
The Youth and Young Adult Coordinator supports existing and new programs where youth and young adults, together with staff and adult youth ministers, can grow in relationship with Christ as a witness to the world, as caretakers of God's Creation, and as creative human beings. As part of the diocesan vision of Beloved Community, DYYA envisions a diocese marked by well-supported, energetic youth leadership, established and quality programs, and a strong, collaborative relationship between the diocese and its congregations, institutions, and ministries.
Relationships:
The Youth and Young Adult Coordinator is a member of the bishop’s staff, within the Congregational Ministries Working Group, and works closely with the Department of Youth and Young Adults. The Coordinator helps implement and update DYYA policies; informs the bishop, his staff, and DYYA of all operations; and offers advice and assistance to youth and young adult ministries throughout the Diocese of California.
General Responsibility:
To support and strengthen youth and young adult ministry in existing diocesan, parish, and institutional programs as well as imagine, create, implement, evaluate, and promote new opportunities.
Specific Responsibilities:
1. The Youth and Young Adult Coordinator has responsibility for hosting DYYA events and for developing and implementing all aspects of youth programming consistent with the DYYA mission, including further mission development, recruitment, training, coordination of volunteers, coordination of program content, and general oversight.
-Train and nurture youth and adult leadership by providing workshops, retreats, and conferences.
-Organize and manage diocesan youth and young adult events such as weekend conferences and summer youth encounters.
-Arrange for diocesan participation in Provincial and National Youth events.
-Coordinate a wide diversity of volunteer leadership.
2. The Youth and Young Adult Coordinator has responsibility for identifying, supporting, and developing congregational and diocesan youth and young adult programs, publicity and promotion of youth and young adult programs with special concern for increasing the visibility of youth and young adult ministry in the life and involvements of the diocese.
-Support college chaplains and campus ministry boards; support diocesan camp and conference ministry and their boards; visit and consult with all parishes, college ministries, regional gatherings, and camps to gain insight, offer support; and collaborate in developing their ministry
-Work with other members of the Congregational Ministries Working Group in developing new communities and congregational ministries directed toward young adults
-Publicize youth and young adult ministry news, planning, and resources via email, DioBytes, tri-annual mailings, and the www.diocal.org website
3. The Youth and Young Adult Coordinator has responsibility for overall administration of diocesan youth and young adult programs, with primary concern for the developmental needs of the population being served, responsible financial management and control, scheduling and coordination of all youth and young adult activities, efficient maintenance of records and official papers, and related personnel management activity.
-Develop, approve and maintain a clear budget
-Provide and maintain resources and supplies
-Develop and present an annual report
-Regularly attend staff, DYYA, campus ministry board and other meetings
4. The Youth and Young Adult Coordinator has responsibility to create unique, relevant and needed formational programs to the youth and young adult population of the diocese, maintain the highest standards of compliance of youth ministry guidelines of the Episcopal Church in current & new programs as well as maintain a current inventory of youth and young adult programs within the diocese.

Minimum Qualifications:
-Bachelor's degree
-Demonstrated effective administrative experience in church related institutions
-Ability to meet the public
-Ability to originate, plan, organize, support and carry out the daily tasks required to offer and support specialized diocesan programs (Happening, Nightwatch, pilgrimages, etc) as well as current programs
-Experienced in youth, camp, campus, and young adult ministry; experience working with a diversity of youth and young adult ministries in a variety of settings
-Willingness to work flexible hours, to be a visible presence throughout the diocese and the desire to work and expand religious programs for youth and young adults. Minimum of 3 days of work at office, located at Diocesan House, in addition to parish visits, weekend program, and diocesan opportunities
